Population of Uttar Pradesh 2011 census


Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populated state it is located in Northern India. The word Uttar Pradesh literally means ‘Northern Province’. Hindi is the most widely used language in Uttar Pradesh. The capital of Uttar Pradesh is Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh is the second largest state in India, in terms of size of economy. Uttar Pradesh, in terms of sheer area size is huge, as its area is equivalent to three times the size of Portugal or half the size of France

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, the population totals of Uttar Pradesh are mentioned below:

Total Population:
The population of Uttar Pradesh as per the 2011 census is 19,95,81,477 compared to 16,61,97,921 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Uttar Pradesh has registered a growth of 20.09% in total population. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 16.49% of the total population of India. It is India’s most populous state.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 10,45,96,415 males and 9,49,85,062 females in Uttar Pradesh. As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio in Uttar Pradesh stands at 908 compared to 898 in the 2001 census. As mentioned in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the state has dipped significantly compared to 2001.

Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) in Uttar Pradesh in 2011 is 2,97,28,235 compared to 3,16,24,628 in 2001. This is an indication that the population growth rate of the state may stabilize in the next decade.

Urban & Rural Population:
Majority of the people of Uttar Pradesh live in rural areas. The rural population makes up 77.72% whereas the urban population makes up 22.28% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 15,51,11,022 & 4,44,70,455 respectively.

Population Density:
The total area of Uttar Pradesh is 2,40,928 Km2. The population density is calculated at 2,146 persons per Km2, which is extremely very high when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. It is to be observed that UP is a large state and about 75% of its population lives in villages.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Uttar Pradesh has a literacy rate of 69.72%. The male literacy is 79.24% where as the female literacy is 59.26% only.
