Kerala is located in the south western part of India. The state was
formed in the year 1956. The capital of the state of Kerala is Thiruvananthapuram.
The state has the highest literacy and sex ratio in the country. The state also
has among the highest population density in the country. Malayalam and English
are the most widely spoken languages in Kerala.

Total Population:
The population of Kerala as per the 2011 census is 33,387,677 compared
to 31,841,374 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Kerala has
registered a growth of only 4.86% in total population. It’s among the lowest
population growth rates in the country. As per estimates, the state will
achieve zero growth rate within the next 20-25 years. Kerala accounts for 2.76%
of the total population of India.
Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 16,021,290 males and 17,366,387 females in Kerala.
As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio of Kerala stands at 1084 compared to 1058
in the 2001 census. Kerala has the
highest sex ratio in the country & is the only state having sex ratio
greater than 1000. As mentioned in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the
state has dipped slightly compared to 2001.

Total Child Population:
The total child
population (0-6 years) in Kerala in 2011 is 3,322,247 compared to 3,793,146 in
2001. This has been a notable decline in child population when compared to the
child population in 2001.
Urban & Rural
Population:
A little over half of the population of Kerala resides in rural areas.
The rural population makes up 52.28% whereas the urban population makes up 47.72%
of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011
census is 17,455,506 & 15,932,171 respectively. The urban population has
almost doubled over the last decade, with a growth rate of around 92.72 %. At
the same time, there has been a decrease in rural population by 25.96 %.
Population Density:
The total area of Kerala
is 38,863 Km2. As per the 2011 census,
population density is calculated at 859 persons per Km2, which is extremely
higher when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. As per
the 2001 census population density was calculated at 819 persons per Km2 which
shows that there has been a meagre increase of close to 4% in population
density over the last decade.
Literacy Rate:
Kerala has the
highest literacy rate in the country. As per the census study of 2011, Kerala
has a literacy rate of 93.91%. The male literacy is 96.02 % where as the female
literacy is 91.98 %. There is a slight improvement in literacy rate as compared
to 2001 when the literacy rate in Kerala was 90.86 %.
