Population of Karnataka 2011 census


Karnataka is located in South West India. It is surrounded by the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. It was previously known as the State of Mysore. The capital of Karnataka is Bengaluru or Bangalore as most people know it. The languages spoken in Karnataka include Kannada, Telugu and English. Bengaluru is the major hub for IT companies in India, so much so that it is referred to as the ‘Silicon Valley’ of India.

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, the population totals of Karnataka are mentioned below:

Total Population:
The population of Karnataka as per the 2011 census is 61,130,704 compared to 52,850,562 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Karnataka has registered a growth of 15.67% in total population. Karnataka accounts for 5.05% of the total population and is the 9th largest in terms of population.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 31,057,742 males and 30,072,962 females in Karnataka. As per the 2011 census, the Sex Ratio of Karnataka stands at 968 compared to 964 in the 2001 census. As mentioned in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the state has dipped slightly compared to 2001.

Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) in Karnataka in 2011 is 6,855,801 compared to 7,182,100 in 2001. This is an indication that the population growth rate of the state may stabilize in the next decade.

Urban & Rural Population:
Close to 2/3rd of the population of Karnataka reside in rural areas. The rural population makes up 61.43% whereas the urban population makes up 38.57% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 37,552,529 & 23,578,175 respectively.

Population Density:
The total area of Karnataka is 191,791 Km2. As per the 2011 census, population density is calculated at 319 persons per Km2, which is lower compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. In 2001, the population density was 276 persons per Km2 which shows that there has been a 16% increase in population density over the last decade.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Karnataka has a literacy rate of 75.60 %. The male literacy is 82.85% where as the female literacy is 68.13% only. There is a significant improvement in overall literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Karnataka was 66.64%.
