Madhya Pradesh, meaning Central Province, is located in the central part of India. The state shares its border with the states of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. It is the 2nd largest state in the country in terms of area. The capital of Madhya Pradesh is Bhopal and Indore is the largest and fastest developing city. Hindi is the main language spoken in Madhya Pradesh.

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, the population totals of Madhya Pradesh are mentioned below:

Total Population:
The total population of Madhya Pradesh is 72,597,565 compared to 60,348,023 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Madhya Pradesh has registered a growth of 20.30% in total population. Madhya Pradesh accounts for 6.00% of the total population of India. It is the 6th largest state in terms of population. 

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 37,612,920 males and 34,984,645 females in Madhya Pradesh. As per the 2011 census, the Sex Ratio of Madhya Pradesh stands at 930 which is a slight improvement when compared to 920 in the 2001 census. Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) in Madhya Pradesh in 2011 is 10,548,295 compared to 10,548,295 in 2001. This is a very small decrease in child population when compared to the child population in 2001. This indicates that the growth rate of total population may decrease in the next decade.

Urban & Rural Population:
A little less than 3/4th of the population of Madhya Pradesh reside in rural areas. The rural population makes up 72.37% whereas the urban population makes up 27.63% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 52,537,899 & 20,059,666 respectively. There has been an increase of 25.63% in urban population over the last decade.

Population Density:
The total area of Madhya Pradesh is 308,245 Km2. As per 2011 census, population density is calculated at 236 persons per Km2, which is low when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. In 2001 the population density was 196 persons per Km2 .  There has been an increase of about 20% in population density in the last decade.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Madhya Pradesh has a literacy rate of 70.63%. The male literacy is 80.53% where as the female literacy is 60.02% only. There is a slight improvement in literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Madhya Pradesh was 63.74 %.
