The latest census carried out in 2011 should spread some cheer among
those who were dissatisfied with Sikkim’s population results in 2001. As
per 2011 census, population of Sikkim is on a path of stabilization
now.
As per the results of 2011 census the population of Sikkim is 607,688 (6.1 Lakhs). With this Sikkim is least populated state in India. Its population though is higher than the union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and the Lakshadweep islands. It covers 0.05 % of India’s total population.
Large Areas of Sikkim are restricted to public access; one needs permits from the army to travel to certain areas of Sikkim as this small area is surrounded by three countries namely Nepal, China and Bhutan. The terrain of this region is uneven and landslides occur very often. For these reasons the population distribution is uneven. Large parts of the state territory are unoccupied and few areas are moderately populated.
The Northern District of Sikkim has a density of just 10 people per square kilometer.
The Overall population density of Sikkim is 86 persons per sq km. It has 321659 males and 286027 Females making the sex ratio of the state 889. The literacy rate of Sikkim is estimated at 73.94 %.
The total population of Sikkim grew by 12.36 % in the last decade. This is a substantial drop from the 33.07 % growth that it recorded in the 2001 census. The 0 – 6 age group population of Sikkim is 61077 of which the number of males are 29659 and females are 31418. The age group of 0 – 6 consists of 10 % of Sikkim’s total population. The higher number of females compared to males in the 0 – 6 age group indicate that the sex ratio of the state is going to improve.
The State Capital of Gangtok recorded a population of 98,658 having 51820 males and 46838 females. It is the most important town in all of Sikkim. As all administration work happens in this area.
