Population of Gujarat 2011 census


Gujarat is located in Western India. The capital of Gujarat is Gandhinagar. Gujarat is the 10th largest state in India, in terms of population. Gujarat is surrounded by the Indian states of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It also shares it border with Pakistan. The languages spoken in the state are Gujarati, English and Hindi. The father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi resided in Gujarat. Gujarat is one of the most industrialized states in the country and Gujaratis in general are well known for their business acumen.

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, the population totals of Gujarat are mentioned below:

Total Population:
The population of Gujarat as per the 2011 census is 60,383,628. In 2001 the population of the state was 50,671,017. In this decade the state has registered a growth rate of 19.17% in total population. Gujarat accounts for 4.99% of the total population of India.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 31,482,282 males and 28,901,346 females in Gujarat. As per the 2011 census, the Sex Ratio of Gujarat stands at 918 compared to 921 in the 2001 census. As observed in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the state has dipped significantly compared to 2001. Indicating that the sex ratio for the state will dip further, it is already below national average of 940.

Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) in Gujarat in 2011 is 7,494,176 compared to 7,532,404 in 2001. This is an indication that the population growth rate of the state may stabilize in the next decade.

Urban & Rural Population:
A little over half of the people of Gujarat live in rural areas. The rural population makes up 57.42% whereas the urban population makes up 42.58% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 34,670,817 & 25,712,811 respectively.

Population Density:
The total area of Gujarat is 196,024 Km2. As per the 2011 census, population density is calculated at 308 persons per Km2, which is lower when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. As per the 2001 census population density was calculated at 258 persons per Km2 which shows that there has been an increase of 19% in population density over the last decade.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Gujarat has a literacy rate of 79.31%. The male literacy is 87.23% where as the female literacy is 70.73% only. There is a significant improvement in literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Gujarat was 69.14 %.
