The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of islands in the Bay of
Bengal that are recognized a Union Territory by the government of India.
The Islands are located about 150 km north of Indonesia. Reports say
that there are a total of 394 islands in the territory having an are of
8,249 sq km. of these only 38 islands are permanently inhabited.
As per the census carried out in 2011 by the government of India, the population of Andaman and Nicobar Islands was 379,944 persons. This is a rise of about 6.68 % compared to the 2001 population which was estimated at 356,152.
Andaman and Nicobars population consists of 202,330 males and 177,614 females in 2011. This makes the Sex ratio of the Union Territory at 878. this is slightly better than the sex ratio of 846 recorded in 2001. The child sex ratio is much better at 966 in 2011.
The Literacy rate of Andaman and Nicobar Islands was estimated at 86.27 % with a total of 293,695 persons being literate. The Female literacy rate is slightly lower, with a total of 129,476 females being literate it is calculated at 81.84 %. The difference between Male and Female Literacy rate is less than 10 % which is a positive indication.
The density of population of Andaman and Nicobar islands in 2011 is at 46 persons per square kilometer.
About 10.4 % of Andaman and Nicobar islands population are children in the age group of 0 to 6. The sex ratio of the 0 to 6 age group is 966 which is much better than the union territories average of 878.
The contribution of population of UT Andaman & Nicobar Islands to total population of India is merely 0.03 %.
